Odour modelling

Odour dispersion modelling is a study that assesses and predicts how odour concentrations are distributed in the environment around industrial, agricultural and other odour-emitting facilities. We carry out odour modelling and air pollution modelling throughout Lithuania.

Odour pollution assessment and modelling

We assess odour generation and dispersion for a wide range of economic activities. We evaluate potential odour sources, technological processes, handling of raw materials, waste and wastewater, and their possible impact on residential areas. Depending on the situation, odour concentration dispersion modelling is carried out to determine how far odour may spread beyond the site boundary. The assessment establishes whether the activity may pose an odour pollution risk, and we prepare well-founded conclusions and recommendations.

What is odour dispersion modelling?

Odour modelling (together with broader air pollution modelling) is carried out with specialised software, taking into account meteorological conditions, emission source parameters and local topography. Pollutant dispersion modelling shows whether a planned or existing activity will comply with the odour concentration limit values set by Lithuanian legislation for residential areas.

When is odour modelling needed?

Pollutant dispersion modelling is required when preparing environmental impact assessment (EIA) documents, public health impact assessment reports and when determining a sanitary protection zone (SPZ). We carry out odour dispersion modelling for many types of facilities – livestock farms, waste management companies, industrial sites and other activities that release odorous substances into the environment.

  • livestock complexes and farms;
  • waste management and recycling companies, landfills;
  • industrial sites with odour-emitting processes;
  • wastewater treatment plants.

What you receive

The modelling results are presented in clear reports with odour dispersion maps, which support SPZ determination, EIA and public health impact assessment documents, and the assessment of impact on surrounding areas.

Example of odour dispersion modelling

Below is an example of a real odour dispersion modelling project – a 3D terrain view with odour concentration contours (in odour units) around the emission source. Such visualisations clearly show how odour spreads in different directions and at what distance from the facility the limit values are exceeded.

FAQ (Frequently asked questions)

A sanitary protection zone (SPZ) is an area around a pollution source in which residential and other sensitive uses are restricted to protect nearby residents from negative impacts. The size of the SPZ is determined, among other things, on the basis of odour and air pollution dispersion modelling results.

Air pollution modelling assesses concentrations of specific pollutants (e.g. particulate matter, nitrogen oxides) in the environment, while odour dispersion modelling assesses the distribution of odour intensity, expressed in odour concentration units. Both types of modelling are often carried out together when preparing EIA or public health impact assessment documents.

It depends on the complexity of the facility and the available input data. Contact us and we will estimate the timeline for your case individually.
